Herman Lieber, Art Patron

Abstract

By 1877 local interest in art had grown. Steele and others started an art association and an art school was established by two Indiana artists with European training. Steele wanted to study art in Europe and in the fall of 1879 Herman Lieber drew up a plan to finance his trip. Lieber and others raised the initial $1300 that enabled the Steele family to stay in Munich from 1880 to 1885. In return, Steele sent his sponsors copies of paintings from the Munich art galleries and work of his own.Destination Indiana - T.C. Steele, the Artist and His Lif
