Abstract

Over the course of the Early Modern Era, the status of the Philippines as Spanish periphery and bastion against a multitude of Asian kingdoms leads to the constant interactions between the Hispanic archipelago and various exogenous polities. Result of these contacts is the transformation of the Philippines into another regional entrepôt that encourages economic exchanges; an open space for the political and cultural collisions and a springboard towards the continental Asia. The above-mentioned peculiarity highlights the importance of the study of “relationship” as a methodological instrument that allows us to inquire into the historical realities of the Hispanic Monarchy. Amidst the Southeast Asian kingdoms with which the Philippines frequently maintained relationships, special mention should be made of Siam, the kingdom that after its foundation in 1351 gained hegemonic power to a certain degree over some polities of the continental Southeast Asia. Given the geostrategic location of the Siamese capital of Ayutthaya with the distance of about a hundred kilometers away from Chaophraya river estuary, the city became a crossroads for merchants from all over Asia and commenced to possess high degree of economic power over hinterland and seaborne trade. In addition, the open economy policy and the religious tolerance of the Siamese monarchs constituted essential factors that favored the long-lived presence of foreign communities of Ayutthaya and attracted the Spaniards of the Philippines to initiate diplomatic, economic and cultural relationships with Siam. Thus, the main objective of this research is to analyze the interactions generated between the Philippines and Siam through various groups of historical agents whose identities prove to be pluralistic; the situations that significantly predominate and condition the forms of relationship between both kingdoms; their adaptation according to certain circumstances and their aftermath. In conclusion, the result of this study shows that, during the Early Modern Era, the kingdom of Siam played a decisive role in the process of development of the Philippines, a Spanish colony regularly inflicted by the financial problems, the natural disasters, the political instability caused by the presence of other European powers, the Muslim pirates and the rebellious aborigines of the Philippine archipelago.
