International Relations Research at the Semi-periphery:Reflections on the 50th Anniversary of the journal Mezinárodní vztahy

Abstract

This article reflects on the fiftieth anniversary of the journal International Relations in terms of world-system theory of Immanuel Wallerstein. It shows how the magazine and the circumstances of its origin and evolution reflects the structural position of Czechoslovakia / Czech research in international relations at semiperipheral. The concept semiperipheral shows how to place a political community (Czechoslovakia / Czech Republic), in the global world-system and the research community (International Relations) in the global scientific field. Article raises three questions: 1. whether, despite the structural constraints in the Czech environment to produce world-class research; Second if there are any benefits associated with the position on semiperipheral; 3. whether the issues and topics that give the research community Czech prominent role. The article claimed that can produce excellent research, because there are some benefits from semiperiferního position.
