Artificial intelligence applications in radiotherapy:The role of the FAIR data principles

Abstract

Radiotherapy is one of the main treatment modalities used for cancer. Nowadays, due to emerging artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, radiotherapy has become a broader field. This thesis investigated how AI can make the life of doctors, physicists and researchers easier. This thesis also showed that clinical routine tasks, such as quality assurance tests, can be automated. Researchers can reuse machine-readable data, while physicists can validate and improve novel treatment techniques such as proton therapy. The abovementioned three pillars contribute to the improvement of patients care (personalised radiotherapy). In conclusion, this technological revolution requires a re-thinking of the original professional figures in radiotherapy and the design of AI studies. This thesis concluded to the fact that radiotherapy professionals and researchers can improve their ability to perform tasks, having AI as a supplementary helping tool
