Getting in control:Towards optimal self-management support for chronically ill patients with limited health literacy

Abstract

This thesis focuses on the self-management of chronically ill patients with limited health literacy. It examines the challenges patients face and their preferences and needs regarding self-management support. In the current literature, most research for patients with limited health literacy has focused on medical management and communication and a lot less on lifestyle and coping with a chronic disease. In addition, patients were asked what they considered important. They find it very important to build a good relationship with their healthcare provider and to work on self-management competencies. Finally, this dissertation contains a descriptive analysis of self-management interventions for this specific group of patients. Based on the findings of these studies, recommendations have been made for the development, design, and implementation of self-management interventions
