Benchmarking adaptive indexing

Abstract

Ideally, realizing the best physical design for the current and all subsequent \nworkloads would impact neither performance nor storage usage. \nIn reality, workloads and datasets can \nchange dramatically over time and index creation impacts the \nperformance of concurrent user and system activity. \nWe propose a framework that evaluates the key premise \nof adaptive indexing --- a new indexing paradigm where index creation and re-organization \ntake place automatically and incrementally, \nas a side-effect of query execution. \nWe focus on how the incremental costs and benefits of dynamic \nreorganization are distributed across the workload\'s lifetime. \nWe believe measuring \nthe costs and utility of the stages of adaptation \nare relevant metrics \nfor evaluating new query processing paradigms \nand comparing them to traditional approaches
