In weakly bottlenecked ruby the decay of 29 cm-1 phonons is found to occur through spatial diffusion to the edge of the excitation zone, also when the phonon packets are fully separated in a magnetic field. The regime of very weak bottlenecking could be disclosed for experiment by a new technique, based on quasi-stationary tracking of the R1 and R2 fluorescence after switching on strong optical pumping
