Planning a Public Transportation System with a View Towards Passengers' Convenience

Abstract

This thesis contributes to the understanding of problems and their relation within the area of public transportation planning. Among the main planning problems, appearing in this area, are network design, line planning, timetabling, and delay management. This thesis comprises five publications in each of which one particular problem is studied. By aligning these works one after another this thesis demonstrates a way in which these problems can be solved sequentially and shows relations between them. The highlighting of the connections between the different problems facilitates their understanding since they have so far mostly been studied as singular problems. Even more, this work shows how passenger convenience aspects as well as company related perspectives are embodied in this area. Passengers' convenience as well as companies' perspective are many-faceted terms comprising a variety of, possibly contradictory, goals. In this work ways of handling goals within mathematical models, during solution procedures, and in the judgment of solution quality are shown
