educativas especiais (NEE)?
pensar e o comportamento do indivíduo (Bohner, 2001, p.240).
autoregisto (i.e., inquérito sociodemográfico, Escala de Atitudes face à
Are the attitudes of childhood educators inclusive? What does
destingue educators in the inclusion of children with NEE? The attitudes of
educators have been identified as a predictor of success or failure of
inclusive education (Avramidis, Bayliss & Burden, 2000; WHO, 2011), as it
is believed that they influence the perception, thinking and behaviour of the
individual (Bohner, 2001, p.240).
In this study we will analyze the attitudes of early childhood
educators towards the inclusion of children with SEN in mainstream classes
and we will test whether socio-demographic variables (e.g., age, gender,
type of service, training, years of service and experience) have a significant
impact on the attitudes of educators towards the implementation of inclusive
education.
It is also our aim to understand which main problems are faced by
educators with the inclusion of children with special educational needs in
ordinary school classes.
Data collection was conducted through self-administered
questionnaires (e.g., socio-demographic survey, Scale of Attitudes towards
Inclusion, Q_II questionnaire and survey of opinion) and is based on the data
of 155 early childhood educators from the Central Zone of Portugal (Aveiro,
Viseu and Coimbra).
Overall, the results allowed us to believe that early childhood
educators have a favorable attitude towards the inclusion of pupils with SEN
and their experiences with them are positive.
Significant differences in the attitudes of teachers towards inclusion
based on age, experience with students with SEN and service time were
found.
Older educators and educators with longer service time had more
negative attitudes towards the inclusion of children with SEN, while
educators with more experience saw inclusion as a process that encompassed
more people.
Regarding the question what special needs are the most difficult to
integrate in inclusive education, we found that the mental disabilities and
autism are the most mentioned by educators.
As far as the major barriers cited by educators to implement inclusion
in their respective institutions are concerned, we found that they are
educational support, training, class size and money.
The most urgent measures that educators would take to improve the
inclusion of children with SEN would be improving and increasing available
resources and professional training as well as educational support
