In 1887 Haynes began experimenting to create a material that would resist tarnishing and be suitable for cutlery. After a number of years he developed the STELLITE® alloy. The name was derived from the Latin word for star, stella, which he felt appropriate because of the alloy’s bright, nontarnishing surface. Today we know it by the name “stainless steel.” He continued to produce other cobalt-based alloys and in 1912 set up a manufacturing site for them.Destination Indiana - Haynes International, a Century of Innovatio
