In 1940 a new post office building was built on Carrollton Avenue just south of Broad Ripple Avenue. As part of a New Deal art program, a mural was commissioned for the post office. The 1942 mural was painted by artist Alan Tompkins, who had formerly taught at the John Herron Art School in Indianapolis. An oil on canvas work titled “Suburban Street,” it is five feet high and almost 12 feet long. The impressive work survives inside the Broad Ripple post office today.Image courtesy A.
