“Homo Europaeus”? A comparative analysis of advertising

Abstract

Il repertorio narrativo della pubblicità è l'unico luogo in cui produttore e consumatore, mittente e destinatario negoziano un format indennitario comune. L'analisi della pubblicità nei paesi europei mostra che non esiste l'Homo Europaeus, ma che ci sono due principali blocchi continentali: uno nord-europeo, che usa pubblicità monocroniche e format narrativi basati su relazioni e meccanismi di rappresentazione del brand soft-sell, in cui il contesto è più rilevante del prodotto stesso; nell'Europa meridionale, invece, troviamo pubblicità policroniche e format narrativi basati sull'idea di performance e meccanismi di rappresentazione di singoli prodotti hard-sell, in cui il contesto perde il suo risalto.The narrative repertoire of advertising is the only place where producer and consumer, sender and receiver negotiate a common identity format. The analysis of advertising in European countries shows that there is no such thing as the Homo Europaeus, but that there are two major continental blocks: a North-European one, using monochronic advertisements, narrative formats based on relationships and soft- sell brand representation mechanisms, in which the context is more relevant than the product itself; in Southern Europe, on the other hand, we find polychronic advertising, narrative formats based on the idea of performance and mechanisms of representation of individual hard-sell products, in which the context loses its prominence
