Il saggio ricostruisce la vicenda genealogica della famiglia fiorentina dei Portinari e pone in evidenza il rapporto di affari con i Medici che si sviluppò durante il Quattrocento. Le relazioni personali fra i Portinari e gli esponenti della famiglia egemone di Firenze non furono mai né semplici, né lineari, ma la rottura definitiva ebbe luogo quando Tommaso Portinari - direttore della filiale di Bruges del Banco Medici - attuò una politica estremamente incauta e disinvolta causando, nel 1478, il fallimento della sede.
