バルザック、フローベール、ゾラなど十九世紀フランス作家の小説を中心に、そこに現れた医療化社会の影響を論じる。医療化の歴史的様相を、医者、流行病、患者の観点から分析し、小説の解釈における歴史的観点の重要性を指摘している
