Future Workshop as a Pedagogical Framework for Doing Problem Based Learning:An Exemplary learning design for a Six-Week Intermediate-Scale, On-Campus University Course

Abstract

Problem based learning (PBL) as guiding learning principles in higher education is challenged in different ways. The defies are linked to the big uptake of students and the big number of students in a year-group, but more seriously, also linked to a ritualization of PBL and a relapse to a lecture based dissemination strategy. This paper is going to address how to design for PBL, so the practice doesn’t ritualize and so the students and professors become participants in a shared learning process even when scaling up the number of students. The research takes point of departure in a single case study using Future Workshop as didactic framework. The case is based within at Aalborg University, which has more than 40 years of experiences with PBL. The institutional pedagogical frame and the subject area are within Communication and Digital Media, fifth semester.
