Formal models of statutory interpretation in multilingual legal systems

Abstract

Using the case of Buchanan v. Babco, the paper argues that multi-lingual settings are particularly apt for disclosing underlying cognitive and reasoning tasks that lawyers have to perform when interpreting a statute. It shows how approaches developed in computer science to model the way in which conflicting ontologies or worldviews are merged and inconsistencies between them repaire
