Reverse Logistics Network Structures and Design

Abstract

Logistics network design is commonly recognized as a strategic supply\nchain issue of prime importance. The location of production facilities,\nstorage concepts, and transportation strategies are major determinants\nof supply chain performance. \nThis chapter considers logistics network design for the particular case\nof closed-loop supply chains. We highlight key issues that companies are\nfacing when deciding upon the logistics implementation of a product\nrecovery initiative. In particular, we point out differences and\nanalogies with logistics network design for traditional \'forward\' supply\nchains. Moreover, we discuss the strategic fit between specific supply\nchain contexts and logistics network structures. Conclusions are\nsupported by a quantitative analysis
