ICTs, disruptive forces and the production paradox in tourism: Present and future issues in the Visitor Attraction sector

Abstract

Visitor Attractions (VAs) represent a fundamentalelement of the tourism landscape. Theemergence and integration of Information andCommunication Technologies (ICTs) in VAs havenot only impacted the modus operandi ofindividual operators but also transformed how theentire sector is distributed and its productconsumed. However, the ICT contribution to thesector remains blurred as a concept, whichhinders both practical and theoreticalimplications. This essay analyses the most currentliterature to illustrate the impact of ICTs in VAs byintroducing the concept of ICT productivityparadox in tourism and sheds light on currentrelated trends. This is followed by a brief discussionwhich lays out future technological implicationsfor the sector. The essay further draws attention tothe great need for research to inform VisitorAttractions researchers and managers
