Advanced Calculus

Abstract

Math 216 studies multivariable calculus using the tools of linear algebra. Basic ideas from one-variable calculus, such as the derivative, integral and Taylor series are studied in the more general setting of n dimensions. In addition, the course serves as an introduction to abstract reasoning and mathematical proof.\ud Topics covered include vectors, multivariable functions (graphs, contour diagrams), limits and the deriva- tive, directional derivatives and gradient, multivariable optimization (constrained and unconstrained), mul- tiple integrals, change of variables, parameterized curves and line integrals, Green’s, Gauss’s and Stokes’s theorems.\ud This course will be demanding. My guess is that homework, reading, etc. will take roughly a minimum of 6-8 hours/week outside of class, probably more
