Abstract

Novel by E.S. Kochergin «Christened by Kresty « is analysed in the present article. Antihuman system of orphan upbringing in children’s institutions of the NKVD in the Soviet time is vividly depicted. The literary work presents the author’s life history. Kochergin was deprived of his parents by the authorities. He was bound to struggle for survival in hard war and post-war time. As a four-year old boy the author was taken along the “road of life” from blockaded Leningrad to Siberia with the first group of children. Returning to his native town to his mother became his aim in life. And he fulfilled his dream by passing through dozens of orphan asylums. The genre of travel novel allowed the author to create broad and truthful picture of “saving children” in the system of the NKVD. The writer has brought new characteristics into the genre of the novel of education that established crucial role of the Soviet reality in the upbringing and correction. He’s revealed from within the ruthless atmosphere of orphan asylums and as a professional artist created profoundly truthful characters and scenes of life
